Clayton Cricket Club

Club History

The Beginning

The club was founded in 1951 under the name of Clayton Methodists due to its church links. Initially the club played friendly matches and all the games were played away from home due to the pitch not being suitable for play. 1952 saw the club play its first competetive season. Clayton Methodists were entered into the Bradford Mutual Sunday School League and played in Group C. The clubs first competitive game was played at Allerton. Clayton were bowled out for a paltry 45 before dismissing Allerton for 22. In 1954 the league expanded and Clayton were placed in Group D. However, successive promotions in 1954, 1955 and 1956 saw Clayton enter the top flight of the league in 1957. Their stay in this division was short lived as they were relegated that season.

Recent History

In 1997 Clayton moved from the Mutual Sunday School League to the Bradford Central League. The first season saw the club find its feet in its new league with both teams finishing mid-table in Division 3. The following year both the first and second teams were Division 3 Champions and promoted to Division 2. 1999 saw both teams promoted again, both promoted as runners up in their respective league. In 2000 the rise to the summit of the Bradford Central League was complete when both teams were Crowned Champions of Division 1 with the first team holding off a challange from title favourites Thornton. Cup success also followed with the club achieving a cup double by winning the Waddilove and Thrippleton Trophies in 2003.

It became apparent that the club needed to move leagues as the Central league began to lose clubs and the club wanted to improve themselves. Clayton applied to the Halifax Cricket League in 2004. The initial application was rejected but after improvements were made to the ground with a new score box and improved shower room the club was accepted in to the league in late in 2005 to play in the 2007 season. This season sees the club enter a new chapter of its history in the Halifax Central League. Hopefully once again we can make many new friends and compete in this new environment and even win some silverware.
